There is a road, no simple highway,
Between the dawn and the dark of night,
And if you go, no one may follow,
That path is for your steps alone ...
The Grateful Dead, 'Ripple', 1970
I have had a long fascination with my formative years. I felt that something important had occurred, that I had lived through a process of change on multiple levels in a very short time. When I tried to quantify what that was I was frustrated that I could not put it into words. I did not have a way to make sense of it without getting some distance in time and space.
Looking back at these events from 30 years on I can finally see the larger theme of finding my place in the world unifying the many threads. That story is as old as the earth and has launched a thousand folk tales and so it launches mine.
